unmarked, circa 1876,
with engraved foliate borders and inscribed, 'Presented to His Excellency Sir George F. Bowen on the occasion of the turning of the first sod of the Portland and Hamilton Railway Thursday, 27th April 1876' , lacking wooden handle, length 32.6cm, approx. weight 10oz.
The Portand railway line is in South-western Australia. It opened in 1877 and runs from Maroona through Hamilton to the port town of Portland. George Bowen was the Governor of Victoria.
