A Royal Collection
23rd November 2023A collection of medals, coins and ephemera from the Deputy Treasurer of Queen Elizabeth II is expected to sell for around £15,000 when it comes up for auction in Salisbury on 28th November.
Commander Sir Philip John Row joined the Royal Household in November 1952, serving as Deputy Treasurer between 1958 and 1968. He was appointed Extra Equerry to Queen Elizabeth in 1969. Prior to this, Row had served in the Royal Navy from 1922, working on the Royal Yacht and rising to the position of Paymaster Commander. His father, whose medals are also included in the sale, achieved the position of Paymaster Rear Admiral and retired to take up a role as Secretary of the King’s Privy Purse.
“Sir Philip’s position in the Royal Household enabled him to put together a collection of Maundy Money – the coins distributed by the monarch every year on Maundy Thursday,” said Ned Cowell, Militaria specialist at Woolley and Wallis. “Also of interest is his collection of Royal Christmas cards from 1953 to 1989, which provide a fascinating record of the first half of Queen Elizabeth’s long reign.”
Sir Philip’s collection forms part of the Medals & Coins, Arms & Armour auction on 28th November.
