Bowls benefit charity
31st May 2023A major UK charity has been gifted £235,000 following the sale of a pair of 18th century Chinese lacquer bowls.
An anonymous private benefactor consigned the bowls to Woolley and Wallis in Salisbury, asking that the proceeds be paid out to Parkinson’s UK.
The red cinnabar lacquer bowls and stands (lot 434) were carved with dragons and sold as part of the Fine Chinese Works of Art auction on 24th May for a hammer price of £235,000 – far exceeding the opening price of £100,000.
Gabriella Bailey, Associate Director of Fundraising and Experience at Parkinson's UK, commented on the sale: "We'd like to say a huge thank you to the generous donors who have donated £235,000 to Parkinson's UK. Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world and around 145,000 people in the UK are living with it. With more than 40 potential symptoms, Parkinson’s can devastate lives. We’ve made huge breakthroughs in the last 50 years, but there is still no cure and current treatments are not good enough. Our work is only made possible thanks to donations from individuals and organisations."
It's the second time the auction house has sold lots to benefit Parkinson’s UK, with the same generous vendor consigning 17 works of art in May 2022, which raised a further £100,000 for the charity (read more here).
