Historic Chinese and Japanese porcelain from Irish family seat
8th November 2024Featured in our Fine Asian Art and Japanese Works of Art sales are more than a dozen, important 17th and 18th century Chinese and Japanese ceramics from Curraghmore, the seat of the 9th Marquis of Waterford and ancestral home of the de la Poer family in Ireland.
Included in the collection are a massive pair of Chinese famille verte models of buddhist lions, Kangxi 1662-1722, a fine Chinese blue and white ‘deer and cranes’ Yen Yen vase of the same period, a pair of Chinese blue and white ‘wenwu shuangquan’ sleeve vases, Transitional period c. 1640 and three Japanese Kakiemon ‘Hampton Court’ vases of the Edo period, 1670-90. Historic photographs of the interior of the house, existing from both the early and mid 20th century, show some of these objects on display in various reception rooms.
“Curraghmore is a magnificent estate that has been in the family for over 800 years. The Chinese and Japanese porcelains that we are offering are over 300 years old and have also probably been in the house since they first arrived in Europe 300 years ago. There has been a huge amount of excitement about the Curraghmore collection with busy viewing days in London and potential buyers coming all the way from Asia to view and handle the objects.” John Axford, head of Asian Art.
Works with such immaculate, unbroken provenance rarely appear on the market. The collection sold strongly in the Fine Asian Art and Japanese Works of Art sales on Tuesday 12th November 2024. Find a link to the sale results here.
