Second online art sale a success

Nearly £58,000 has been raised for a nationwide charity offering support to long-term spinal patients in UK hospitals.
An online art auction, held in support of Salisbury-based Horatio’s Garden, attracted almost 200 bidders. Artworks were donated by a number of artists including Maggi Hambling, Sophie Ryder, Sean Henry, Tania Schmieder, John Illsley and screen director, Tim Burton.
Usual buyer’s charges were waived by auction hosts, Woolley and Wallis, and by The Saleroom to allow all proceeds to go direct to the charity.
“This is the second art auction we’ve been able to conduct for Horatio’s Garden and I’m pleased that people have responded so well and participated to raise much-needed funds,” said Woolley and Wallis’s Managing Director, Natalie Milsted. “The charity is a cause we are proud to support and we’re grateful to all of the artists who have so generously donated their works.”
Top lots included Sean Henry’s bronze sculpture Man Waiting, at £4,500; Maggi Hambling’s Wave IV (Black and White) at £4,300; Sophie Ryder’s Ladyhare with Dog, at £3,200 and Jill Berelowitz’s Emergence Male and Female at £3,800. Sir Quentin Blake donated a signed giclee print that fetched £825, while Dire Straits’ bassist, John Illsley’s Solent No. 20 sold for £1,550.
Horatio’s Garden was established in Salisbury by David and Dr Olivia Chapple. The first garden opened in 2012 at the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment at Salisbury Hospital; others followed at the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit, Glasgow, and at the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries.
