Fair Weather and Foul: 200 Years of British Marine Painting
20th October 2025In recognition, of Sir Edward Heath's love of sailing, paintings specialist Richard Kay will give an illustrated talk at Arundells covering marine themes and sailing subjects in (mainly) British art from the Battle of Trafalgar to the present day. From storm-lashed seascapes to elegant sailing yachts, Richard will uncover how artists have captured the drama, beauty, and spirit of life at sea over the last two centuries.
The five most 'famous' vessels from the past two centuries are included, as well as works by artists as varied as J M W Turner, John Constable, William Wyllie, Whistler, Alfred Wallis, L S Lowry, Montague Dawson and Sir Terry Frost, all serving to show how the call of the wild wide ocean has inspired a fine variety of art from the past two hundred years.
The talk will take place at the former home of Sir Edward Heath, Arundells, 59 The Close, Salisbury SP1 2EN on Thursday 6 November at 2.30pm.
Tickets cost £16 per person, available through the Arundells website.
