Portrait of Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl of Granville (1815-1891)

Signed, titled and dated 1847

Black and white chalk heightened with coloured chalks

Lord Granville was a notable 19th century statesman. As well as leading the Liberal Party, he had three spells as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and was a close friend of William Gladstone.

George Richmond portrayed Lord Granville on a second occasion in 1876 (National Portrait Gallery, London, no. NPG4900).
