Catalogue Notes:
Alexander Morton & Co. opened its first factory in Scotland in 1881. In 1896, Gavin Morton's cousin, Alexander Morton (1844–1923), travelled to County Donegal, Ireland, where he helped revive the hand-knotted carpet industry in Killybegs by drawing on the local community’s long-standing expertise in working with wool. Inspired by the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement, Morton aimed to both provide employment for those in poverty and preserve the region’s traditional wool-weaving skills.
