A Chinese porcelain plate Kangxi 1662-1722

A Chinese porcelain plate Kangxi 1662-1722, the well moulded with a subtle flowerhead design within an original narrow hatched border in underglaze blue, later enamelled in England c.1760-70 in the Imari manner in iron red and gilt with three Islamic-style ogee-petal panels reserved on a diamond diaper ground, alternating with a gilt figure of a European man holding a bundle on the end of a stick, the border with red and gilt floral detailing, 22.6cm.

The pattern is a direct copy of a Japanese pattern, c.1730, illustrated on a bowl and saucer dish in Porcelain for Palaces, p.225, pl.239, where it is noted that the Derby factory copied the pattern (illustrated on p.294, pl.355).
