A FINE CHINESE DOUCAI 'MEDALLION' BOWL
SIX-CHARACTER QIANLONG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1735-96

The tall flaring sides delicately painted in underglaze blue and polychrome enamels, with five roundels formed as fruiting peach trees with leafy branches, alternating with stylised pomegranates and further leaves; a colourful border of lappets with scroll details above the foot; a paper label reading 'OCS 2006, THE WORLD IN COLOURS, NO.79', 15.2cm.

Cf. The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelains in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours, Hong Kong, p.216, no.197 for a closely related medallion design. This decoration on bowls is based on Kangxi period prototypes, such as the example in the Qing Court collection. The pattern continued in the subsequent reigns, with known examples from the Qianlong, Jiaqing and Daoguang periods. Cf.
