A fine Chinese armorial soup plate c.1769, decorated with the arms of Fitzroy, Duke of Grafton accolle with Fitzroy impaling Wrottesley, the rim with branches of flowering peony and other Oriental flowers, a few small rim nibbles, 22.7cm. (2) Provenance: 10th Duke of Grafton sale, Puttick and Simpson, 1965. The Angus Percival collection, Christie's, January 1985. It is possible that this service, along with one decorated with the arms of Pitt impaling Grenville, was one of two services commissioned by the East India Company for the two ex Prime Ministers (Augustus Henry, 3rd Duke of Grafton, and William Pitt the Elder whom he succeeded).
