A good Chinese iron-red and gilt decorated urn-shaped vase and cover
A good Chinese iron-red and gilt decorated urn-shaped vase and cover, moulded in relief with pendant garrya flower swags and painted with two oval river landscape scenes with pagodas, castles and ships on a square faux-bois base, Qianlong, late 18th century, 42.5cm. (2) This shape has been traced back to designs by Stefano della Bella of the late 16th century at the time he was working for Ferdinand de Medici. These were first published in England by Israel Sylvester and a later edition by Sayer was faithfully reproduced by Wedgwood. This Wedgwood version was the model the Chinese copied, though the design was also copied by the Marieburg factories in Sweden and this may have been the source of inspiration for Sifwertson. However Buerdeley attributes the design to a Scandinavian silver original.
