A large early Victorian giltwood overmantel mirror in mid 18th century style

A large early Victorian giltwood overmantel mirror in mid 18th century style, the shaped central plate flanked by marginal plates within a leaf and fruit scroll frame, with a boldly carved leaf surmount, within 'C' scrolls, with a cartouche shape base, 226 x 172cm.

Compton Castle, Compton Pauncefoot, Somerset. Bought at the house sale held on the 10th and the 11th April 1961.

The Property of a Deceased Estate.

Compton Castle and its gardens were constructed in the Gothic style by John Hubert Hunt in 1820-1825. It is thought that Hunt's architect was John Finden (1782-1849) who exhibited drawings for the house at the Royal Academy in 1821. Hunt died in 1830 and the house was let to various tenants. In 1911, Compton Castle and its landscaped garden were sold to William Peake Mason, later Lord Blackford.
