Catalogue Note
William Bateman Fagan (1860–1948) was an English sculptor and architectural carver, born in Bermondsey, London. He studied at the South London Technical School of Art (Lambeth School of Art) between 1881 and 1885 under William Silver Frith, subsequently establishing a substantial London workshop. Although principally known for architectural sculpture in stone, bronze and concrete, Fagan also produced portrait heads, statuettes and reliefs, exhibiting regularly in London from the 1880s onwards. His portrait work demonstrates the sensitivity to character and modelling evident elsewhere in his sculpture. Fagan was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1938. During the First World War he served with the Royal Army Medical Corps at the 3rd London General Hospital, working alongside the sculptor Francis Derwent Wood in the treatment of facial injuries.
