DATED '1840'

presumably made from the remains of York Minster after the fire of 1840, with a part hinged lid with a silver plaque engraved with a view of the burning York Minster and dated 'May 20th 1840'

The fire at York Minster on the 20th May 1840 was the second great fire at the Minster, the first was in 1829.
