A RARE ELIZABETH I BOARDED OAK STOOL

AN OAK BOARDED STOOL

Probably 16th / 17th Century elements but later constructed

the seat with a moulded edge above friezes pierced with a keyhole and semi-circular designs with concave ends, on slightly slanting Gothic arch cut-out supports

48.5cm high, 48.4cm wide, 27.5cm deep

Catalogue Note

For similar examples see Tobias Jellinek, Early British Chairs and Seats 1500-1700, p. 195, pl. 238. The stool was formerly in the Adler Collection and was sold by Sotheby's, 24th February 2005, lot 60 for £15,000. Also a stool in the Clive Sherwood Collection, sold by Sotheby's, 22nd May 2002, lot 84. An example can also be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection, no. w.95-1921, donated by A. H.
