A JAPANESE SCROLL PAINTING BY NAKABAYASHI CHIKUTO (1776-1853), KAKEMONO

EDO PERIOD, 18TH/19TH CENTURY

Depicting an autumnal scene with a small fishing boat sailing on a lake, with tall reeds bending in the breeze and the silhouettes of mountains in the distance, two lines of calligraphy to the side including a poem describing the 'tranquil autumn scene with the shadow of a boat cast on a lake', signed Chikuto and with two red artist's seals, 55.5cm x 37.5cm.

Provenance: a Spanish private collection, Madrid. Purchased from Sydney L. Moss Ltd, London, on 20th June 1997. A copy of the original invoice is available.

Works by Nakabayashi Chikuto often depict quiet landscapes in the Nanga style imitating Chinese literati painting. He was also acclaimed during his career as a designer of illustrated books.
