A Japanese kakejiku (hanging scroll painting), with a long kanshi (a Japanese poem written in Classical Chinese) about a youth of immense ambition who strides toward high office rather than enduring humiliation, possessing a spirit that 'swallows the mountains and rivers', signed Shoin and 'a seventy-six year old man'; in a tomobako (wood box) inscribed Goto Shoin and describing the poem as a five-character quatrain in Japanese and Chinese style; together with a Chinese fan painting depicting a snowy landscape, in ink and colour on paper, signed Banyi and dated Gengxu year; 131cm x 28cm and 51cm.
