A British Empire Medal and Military Medal group of six to Sergeant Charles A. Stirling, Durham Light Infantry: B.E.M., George VI (CHARLES A. STIRLING), officially re-engraved; M.M., George V (21618 SJT: C.A. STIRLING. 13/DURH: L.I.); 1914-15 Star (21618 L.SJT C.A. STIRLING. DURH: L.I.); British War Medal 1914-20 (21618 C. SJT. C.A. STIRLING. DURH. L. I.); Victory Medal (21618 C. SJT. C.A. STIRLING. DURH. L. I.); Defence Medal, unnamed as issued; later mounted for display, good very fine.

B.E.M. London Gazette: 01/01/1951: "Charles Albert Stirling, Plater, Consett Iron Company Ltd. (Blackhill, Co. Durham)". A disaster had occurred at this steel works the previous July, when 11 men were killed and many others harmed by the accidental escape of carbon monoxide. It may be that the BEM was awarded for some service in relation to relief efforts but it has not been possible to verify this.

M.M. London Gazette 09/12/1916 "For bravery in the field". The battalion war diary records that Sergeant Stirling was presented with the ribbon for his MM, in Poperinghe, 29/10/1916, following a period spent in action during of the Somme Offensive, including the Battle of Le Transloy.
