An India Medal 1849-95 to Private John Smith, 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade, clasp: Northwest Frontier (1435 PTE J. SMITH. 3 BN RIF. BDE), impressed in serif capitals, extremely fine and attractively toned.

Private Smith served in the expedition of Brevet Colonel A. F. Macdonnell, C.B., against Sultan Muhammed Khan, who had attacked the fort at Shabkadar, in the winter of 1863-64. He died at Nowshera, where there was a British cantonment, on the 25th of May 1865.
