Elizabeth Claypole was the second daughter of Oliver Cromwell. She was reputedly Cromwell’s favourite daughter, known by him as ‘Bettie’. A portrait of Elizabeth, which seems to relate to the present work, is in the Cromwell Museum, Huntingdon (no.HUTCM:B9).
