The present work is probably a preliminary study for the Mother and Child exhibited by George Romney at the Society of Artists in 1771 (see A. Kidson, George Romney: A Complete Catalogue of his Paintings (New Haven and London, 2015), p.822, no.1783). We are grateful to Alex Kidson for his assistance cataloguing the present work.
