The present work was originally part of the collection of James Leathart, a significant patron of the Pre-Raphaelites, including Simeon Solomon. Leathart lived in Newcastle and was actively involved in the arts, organising exhibitions that highlighted Pre-Raphaelite work in North-East collections. He was probably introduced to Solomon by either Edward Burne-Jones or Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and artist and collector corresponded frequently in the 1860s.
