Our September sale features over 500 lots of British and European Old Master and 19th-century paintings, to be sold over two days. Amongst the highlights of the Old Master Paintings section are a monumental work by Paul de Vos (Lot 271), one of the leading animal painters of his time; a sixteenth-century depiction of St Jerome, from the circle of Joos van Cleve (Lot 255); and an early view of Dover by the marine artist Jacob Knyff (Lot 296). The nineteenth-century paintings include works by British and European painters as diverse as Walter Osborne (Lot 487), Frederick Morgan (Lot 485) and Petrus van Schendel (Lot 460).
One of the most notable Old Master Drawings included in the sale is a red chalk study by Guercino (Lot 67), which comes to the market for the first time in sixty years. Some of the most significant figures in British art are also represented, with examples by J.M.W. Turner (Lots 85 and 186), John Constable (Lot 86) and William Blake (Lot 185). The sale begins with a selection of portrait miniatures, including works by Richard Cosway (Lots 24-25), George Engleheart (Lot 26) and Pierre Adolphe Hall (Lot 38).
