Old Masters, British & European Paintings

Wednesday 8th March 2023. Starts at 10:30am

THE VIEWING OF THIS SALE WILL TAKE PLACE AT OUR OLD SARUM GALLERIES:

Unit 1B, Castle Gate Business Park Old Sarum, Salisbury SP4 6QX

Our March sale features nearly 350 lots of British and European paintings. Amongst the highlights is a monumental work by Herbert Draper, who has been described as ‘one of the best and least recognised classical painters’ (lot 319). This work is the last of Draper’s major mythological paintings, and has remained unseen in the collection of artist’s family for over 100 years.

Views of London painted prior to the Great Fire of 1666 are extremely rare, but the sale includes one such work, depicting the Thames at Westminster on Lord Mayor’s Day, a fascinating and important early record of the capital (lot 230). Painted 200 years later, Henry Pether’s exquisite moonlit view of the Thames also shows an area of London much changed, as the Gothic style Middle Temple Library was destroyed in the Blitz (lot 268).

Amongst the highlights of the European Old Masters, are two beautiful still lifes by Carlo Manieri and Gaspar Pieter Verbruggen II (lots 236 & 235). The 19th Century European paintings are led by a view of Egypt by Ernest Koerner (lot 307) as well as a portrayal of the famed actress Sarah Bernhardt in the role of the Duke of Reichstadt, Napoleon Bonaparte’s son (lot 321).

The works on paper section is centred around a group of 18th and 19th-century British watercolours and drawings consigned by a local private collector, including a landscape by Thomas Gainsborough (lot 265). The sale also contains a selection of portrait miniatures, including a fine portrait of Sir David Wilkie (lot 22)
