Paton was a pupil of J.A. Houston. As a young man, his family, including his brother, the artist Sir Joseph Noel Paton, often spent summer holidays on Arran, where they would sketch. Ruskin and Millais were both friends of his brother Noel and he has been described as the leading exponent of the Pre-Raphaelite landscape in Scotland. Paton exhibited views of Arran at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1854.
