Mary Ross was daughter of Richard Emmott of Emmott Hall, Colne, Lancashire. She married in 1769, Alexander Gray of Skibo, Sutherlandshire, he succeeded to the estate of Cromarty in 1767 and took the name of Ross, on the death of his Uncle
