A number of mezzotint plates were found in Turner's house after he died, including this plate, which has three titles. It was never printed in Turner's lifetime Sir Francis Seymour Hayden took a few impressions c.1873 and it was subsequently sold and then reworked. The source of the composition is the watercolour of 1823-6 in the Tate Gallery.
