DAY 2

Lots 455-514 - Property of The Cider House Galleries, Part 1

Lots 515-862 - Oil Paintings

The August sale comprises over 850 lots, spanning 400 years of British and European art. Sir Joshua Reynolds’ Girl leaning on a pedestal (lot 619) has been hanging for decades on the walls of a family home, the owners believing it to be a copy. Unbeknownst to them, they had in fact been living with an original and important work by one of the most significant figures of the British art world in the 18th century, a painting with hugely illustrious provenance, last seen over eighty years ago and which was believed by scholars to be missing. Other highlights to emerge from private collections include a portrait by Michiel Jansz. Van Mierevelt (lot 545), and a winter landscape by Joseph van Bredael (lot 557). Included in the works on paper section are 13 superb examples of Helen Allingham’s watercolours, which have passed by descent from Sir Owen Aisher (lots 180-192). Sir Owen was one of the most significant collectors of her work and put together the famous Marley Collection, which set record prices when it was sold at Christie’s in 1991.

We are also delighted to be offering a large collection of works from the estate of Edward Croft-Murray, a former Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, which reflects his deep passion and knowledge of art and music (lots 346-454). Other notable collections include that of Bill Thomson, of the Albany Gallery (lots 249-345), and works from The Cider House Galleries (lots 455-514).
