The 5th and 6th October Silver & Objects of Vertu auction comprises over 900 lots of antique, post war and modern silver, flatware, Irish, Scottish and foreign silver, books and a number of collections.

A particular highlight of the sale are two racing interest lots, both by family descent of William Gilbert, racehorse trainer, to the current owner. The first, lot 900, is a pair of Victorian silver-mounted candlesticks, by George Wish, Sheffield 1886, which are formed from the femurs of the leg bones of the ox roasted to mark the marriage of Fred Archer to Helen Dawson in 1883 and were purchased by Gilbert.  Archer was one of the most celebrated 19th century jockeys winning 2,748 flat races, including five Derby’s and six St Legers.  The final lot of the sale, lot 902, is a Victorian silver presentation racing trophy, The Warwick cup, by the Barnards, London 1874.  The impressive trophy is modelled as a chariot pulled by four horses, and with a presentation plaque inscribed ‘Won by Lilian 5 Years Old’. William Gilbert was the trainer, and the owner was so impressed with the win, she gave the trophy to him.

Also in the sale is a Private Collection of Regimental silver. Comprising 32 lots, each with links to various Regiments. A feature of the collection is lot 481, a George III entrée dish and cover from The Picton Service, by Paul Storr, London 1814, engraved with the Picton arms and ‘Third Division’.  At the end of the Peninsular war in April 1814, the General Staff and Officers who served under General Sir Thomas Picton commissioned a generous dinner service to be presented to their commander, which included the entrée dish in the sale. Other collections include Mordan & Co silver, a library of silver reference books, sixteen lots of lancet cases and two comprehensive private collections.
