A Regimental presentation silver salver
A Regimental presentation silver salver, The Royal Dublin Fusiliers,
by William Hutton and Sons, Sheffield 1913,
circular form, moulded border, the centre engraved with the Regimental badge and inscribed 'Presented to the Officers, 1st Battalion The Royal Dublin Fusiliers by Lieut A. B. Bagley. 15 April 1914', on three gnarl feet, diameter 26cm, approx. weight 16oz.
The Regiment was raised in Ireland in 1881 by the amalgamation of the Royal Bombay Fusilier's and the Royal Madras Fusiliers. It saw service in the Boer War, World War I and II and was involved in the 1916 Easter Uprising. In 1922 the Regiment was disbanded.
Captain Arthur B. Bagley (1891-1918) joined the Dublin Fusiliers in 1912, and was stationed in Madras. On the 15h April 1914 he was promoted to Lieutenant, and this salver was probably his gift to the regiment on his promotion. He returned to England and started flying training at the Central Flying School at Upavon. When he qualified as a flying officer he was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps in November 1914. He was posted to France and then invalided back, where he went on to teach flying.
He returned to France and on the 28 February 1917 was awarded the Military cross for his action at Saint-Saillysel. He was wounded and later died from shell fire on the 29th October 1918 at the age of 27, fourteen days before Armistice was signed.
