A George II silver sauce boat, by Charles Gibbons, London 1732, circular form, side handle, on a circular foot, scratch initialled to base 'G' over 'IA', height 6.5cm, diameter 11cm, approx. weight 7oz. For a similar example of this sauce boat see Michael Clayton, The Collector's Dictionary of Silver and Gold of Great Britain and North America, The Hamyln Publishing Group 1971 page 244. Another example can be seen in Robin Butler, The Albert Collection, Broadway Publishing, 2004, page 643. It discusses here that this form of jug was peculiar to the West Country and made in Plymouth 1720-1750. The nature of the liquid that these jugs were originally supposed to contain has not been determined. It goes on to mention that a small number were made in London.
