£4,000 - £6,000

£7,620

A George I silver mug,
by Paul de Lamerie, London 1718,
tapering circular form, scroll handle, engraved with an armorial, on a raised circular foot, height 9.3cm, approx. weight 7.5oz.

Provenance: A Private Collection.

The arms are those of Brownlow beneath a Viscount's coronet and for John Brownlow (1691-1754) who was created 1st Viscount Tyrconnell in 1718. He inherited Belton House in Norfolk in 1700 and sat as Member of Parliament for Grantham (1713-1715) and Lincoln (1715-1722)- his Irish peerage did not stop him holding a seat in Westminster. He was made a Knight of the Bath in 1725 (one of the original members when the order was reinstituted), elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1735 and one of the Society of Antiquaries in 1740. When he died in 1755 he left a widow, his second wife, Elizabeth (nee Cartwright) but no heir and the estates were inherited by his nephew Brownlow Cust (1st Baron Brownlow from 1776- the family were also Earls Brownlow from 1815-1921).
