An early-17th century West Country silver Apostle spoon, St James the Greater,
An early-17th century West Country silver Apostle spoon, St James the Greater,
marked four times with conjoined TG for Thomas Griffith, Bristol circa 1635,
fig-shaped bowl, faceted tapering stem, gilded Apostle finial, prick dot initialled to the reverse of the bowl 'E.R', length 18.6cm, approx. weight 1.6oz.
Some spoons by Thomas Griffith have v-joints, suggesting they were made by his son Edward Griffith, who was a London apprentice in 1628 and later returned to work with his father in 1633. Please see Tim Kent's West Country Silver Spoons and Their Makers, 1992, p.97.
