A CHINESE WUCAI BALUSTER 'MARRIAGE PROPOSAL' VASE
TRANSITIONAL PERIOD, C.1640

Painted with a procession of figures, with three on horseback surrounded by attendants carrying lanterns, jars and boxes whilst another attendant knocks on a gate, the central rider carrying an osmanthus branch, with a small dog appearing from underneath the wall, all surrounded by pine and wutong trees and rockwork, below borders of scrolls and prunus, with a wood stand, 28.5cm. From the collection of Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay GCB, KCMG, CVO, PC,1877-1945, and thence by descent. Sir Ronald Lindsay was a British civil servant and diplomat. He was the British Ambassador to Turkey from 1925-26 and to Germany from 1926-28; from 1928-30, he was Permanent Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and from 1930-39 the British Ambassador to the United States of America.
