Catalogue Note

The Tomb of the Scipios is one of the most important surviving funerary monuments of the Roman Republic. Located along the ancient Via Appia, the tomb served as the burial place of the distinguished Scipio family, whose members included renowned military leaders and statesmen. Established in the early third century BCE, the monument preserves valuable evidence of Roman funerary practices and aristocratic self-representation during the Republican period.
