Attributed to Benjamin Croft Evans (1876-1958)
Self Portrait of a Young Artist, Half-Length, wearing a Dark Suit and Holding a Palette and Brushes
Oil on canvas
68 x 56.5cm

This portrait had previously been thought to depict Philip Wilson Steer. However, a comparison to a contemporary photograph of Steer suggests this must be a misidentification. An intriguing hint as to the origin of this error can be found in photograph of Augustus John, Ambrose McEvoy and a third sitter, previously thought to be Steer, but who is now believed to be Benjamin Croft Evans (National Portrait Gallery, London, no.NPG P1830). The photograph of Evans seems to show a close resemblance to our sitter.
