By descent in the family of the sitter

The sitter (1880-1966) was born at Rosefield, Sevenoaks, Kent, the elder son of de Barri and Rose Mary Crawshay of the family of Ironmasters at Cyfarthfa. He became a sailor, a businessman, a racing driver, a clock repairer and latterly a church warden and organist at Maldon in Essex. He married his third wife, Joyce Michell (b.1920), in 1960.
