tapering circular bowl, matted decoration, engraved with the shield of Winchester College and the arms of Burge?, inscribed 'Huberto Murray Burge per decem anns Collegii Btae Mariae Winton ppe Winton Informatori ad Episcopatum discenti amoris ac desiderii sui signum poculum hoc d.d magistri adsistentes XXXIII A.S. MCMXI', on a knopped stem, on a raised circular foot, the pull-off cover with a raised cover and baluster finial, height 36.5cm, approx. weight 29.3oz.

Hurbert Burge (1862-1925) was educated at Bedford College and Marlborough College. He matriculated at University College Oxford in 1882, graduating B.A in 1886. He went on to be a schoolmaster at Wellington College, after which he was Fellow and Dean of his old College. He graduated as a Bachelor of Divinity in 1902. After being Head Master of Repton College he became Head Master of Winchester College from 1901-11. In 1911 he became the Bishop of Southwark.
