The department holds four annual international auctions of oil paintings, watercolours, prints, miniatures and sculpture, ranging from the 16th to 21st Centuries. In June and November/December we hold specialist Modern British and 20th Century Art sales and in September and March we hold specialist Old Masters, British and European Paintings sales. We can sell studio collections and private collections as well as single works of art, and offer free sale valuations at our Castlegate offices or we are happy to discuss items and give advice. A department highlight was the sale of a hunting scene by Sir Alfred Munnings KCVO, PRA, in 2014 which sold for £200,000.
Our September Old Master, British & European paintings auction had 401 lots with an over 70% sold rate and a sale total of nearly £450,000 (hammer price). A highlight included a self portrait by an Italian artist Lucia Casalini Torelli which followed the current interest in female artists and fetched £60,000. A stunning painting by Dutch artist Gerrit van Honthorst made £30,000 and a very large seascape by Abraham Storck sold for £50,000
Our June 6th Modern British & 20th Century Art auction followed the huge success of our February single-owner Modern sale with another large private collection. Overall the sale made a buoyant £527,000 total and had a strong sale rate of over 77%. Highlights included a view of Hastings by Lucien Pissarro (£34,000), a Still life of flowers by Sir Matthew Smith CBE (£23,000), a small drawing of a cat by Gwen John (£10,000) and a view of Charleston by Vanessa Bell (14,000).
Ivory - Recent legislation on the sale of ivory allows the sale of Miniature portraits over 100 years old so we are still very happy to date and value these for possible sale in our March or September auction.
