Paintings

The department holds four annual international auctions of oil paintings, watercolours, prints, miniatures and sculpture, ranging from the 16th to 21st Centuries.  In June and November/December we hold specialist Modern British and 20th Century Art sales including prints, watercolours, oils and sculpture.  In September and March we hold specialist Old Masters, British and European Paintings sales including fine miniatures, prints and paintings.  We can sell studio collections and private collections as well as single works of art, and offer free sale valuations at our Castlegate offices or we are happy to discuss items and give advice. A department highlight was the sale of a hunting scene by Sir Alfred Munnings KCVO, PRA, in 2014 which sold for £200,000.

We are pleased to be offering two exceptional Dutch works of art in our September Old Masters & 19th Century Paintings auction - a rare painting of a Shepherdess by Gerrit van Honthorst  (estimate £40,000-60,000) and a large marine painting of the Gulden Leeuw (Golden Lion) off Amsterdam by Abraham Jansz Storck (estimate £60,000-80,000).  The sale will be online shortly but for further details do contact the department.

Our 6th June Modern British & 20th Century Art sale had many good private collections of paintings and highlights including a landscape by Lucien Pissarro (£34,000), a still life by Sir Matthew Smith CBE (£23,000), a Duncan Grant (£14,500) and a Vanessa Bell (£14,000).

On 7th February we held a sale of the Corsham antiques dealer, Geoffrey Harley's private picture collection.  This one-owner auction of 190 lots was an exceptional sale for the department with fabulous prices and a 95% sale rate.  The sale included many paintings from Scottish and Cornish artists and this appealed particularly to buyers from both.  Highlights included the cover lot by William Scott (£102,000), a Patrick Heron (£55,000), a Keith Vaughan (£29,000), a Henry Scott Tuke (£24,000), a Paul Feiler (£18,000) and a Craigie Aitchison (£17,000) and a Duncan Grant (£13,000) among others.  Sculpture prices were also strong with a Michael Ayrton sculpture selling for £38,000 and a sculpture by Lynn Chadwick for £29,000)

IvoryRecent legislation on the sale of ivory allows the sale of Miniature portraits over 100 years old so we are still very happy to date and value these for possible sale in our September auction.

If you would like to discuss a sale or valuation please contact the specialist Victor Fauvelle or his assistant Jo Butler.
