4th September 2019 - Old Masters, British & European Paintings - entries close 19th July
The department holds four annual international auctions of oil paintings, watercolours, prints, miniatures and sculpture, ranging from the 16th to 21st Centuries. In June and November/December we hold specialist Modern British and 20th Century Art sales and in September and March we hold specialist Old Masters, British and European Paintings sales. We can sell studio collections and private collections as well as single works of art, and offer free sale valuations at our Castle Gate offices or we are happy to discuss items and give advice. A department highlight was the sale of a hunting scene by Sir Alfred Munnings KCVO, PRA, in 2014 which sold for £200,000.

Our March Old Master, British & European paintings auction had 446 lots with sale total of just over £480,000 (hammer price). One of the highlights from this sale was lot 44 which included: a 19th/20th century Indian gouache of a goddess blessing a union, a gouache of two females beneath a new moon and a miniature on ivorine of lovers. This lot fetched the incredible price of £50,000. In addition to this, a panoramic view of Constantinople by Charles Robertson sold for £16,000, a Cornish village watercolour by Walter Langley reached £8,500 and an album of Indian watercolours made £25,000.
Our December 4th Modern British & 20th Century Art auction was, as always with the Christmas sales, very exciting. Overall the sale made over £550,000 total and had a strong sale rate of around 77%. Highlights included the cover lot by Sir Claude Francis Barry (£24,000), a still life of quince by Eliot Hodgkin (£19,000), two Mary Fedden's that sold for £14,000 and £15,000, an interesting portrait by Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe RA of Lawrence of Arabia (£12,000), an unusual Scottish view by Samuel John Lamorna Birch RA (10,000) and one of a superb group by Edward Bawden CBE RA (13,000) and also a Craigie Aitchison CBE, RA (£15,000). We are already collecting some interesting items for our June Modern sale.
Ivory - Recent legislation on the sale of ivory allows the sale of Miniature portraits over 100 years old so we are still very happy to date and value these for possible sale in our March or September auction.
